PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — Authorities are investigating a drowning at Hippie Hole in the Black Hills after emergency crews were dispatched to the popular swimming and cliff-jumping area at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one person died in the incident. Officials said the deceased was visiting the Black Hills from outside the area.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Hippie Hole is a popular recreation destination but is known for its rugged terrain and difficult access, creating challenges for emergency responders.
Over a dozen area agencies responded to the scene.
