PIERRE, S.D. — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map, released Thursday, shows nearly 90 percent of South Dakota continues to experience drought and abnormally dry conditions, with varying levels of intensity affecting over 640,000 people.
73 percent of the state is experiencing moderate drought conditions while 8.5 percent, mostly in the Southwest corner of the state, are under extreme drought conditions. That area includes all of Lawrence and Fall River counties, most of Custer county, the western half of Pennington County, the western edge of Meade County and Oglala Lakota County along the Nebraska border.
