DEVILS TOWER, Wyo. — Firefighters continue battling two wildfires near Devils Tower National Monument, where the larger Left Creek Fire has burned about 282 acres southwest of the landmark and forced the monument’s closure. The fire, believed to have been sparked by lightning, remains outside the monument boundary but was at 25% containment as of Sunday afternoon.
More than 100 firefighters, supported by helicopters and air tankers, have worked to establish fire lines and prevent further spread. Officials said the quick response helped keep the blaze from growing into a much larger incident.
Complicating suppression efforts, a second wildfire known as the Newton Fire ignited southeast of Devils Tower on Sunday and quickly expanded to an estimated 200 acres. The new fire prompted additional road closures and placed nearby residents on alert for possible evacuation.
Authorities said firefighting resources are being deployed to both incidents, while Devils Tower National Monument remains closed until conditions improve and fire activity decreases.
