South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined attorneys general from 16 states in urging Congress to pass the STOP FRAUD in Medicaid Act, which would expand state Medicaid Fraud Control Units’ authority to investigate and prosecute Medicaid beneficiary fraud.
Currently, MFCUs are largely limited to pursuing fraud by Medicaid providers. Jackley said the legislation would help protect taxpayer dollars and preserve benefits for eligible recipients.
In 2025, Medicaid Fraud Control Units nationwide recovered nearly $2 billion, returning $4.64 for every dollar invested, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. South Dakota’s MFCU recovered more than $225,000 in criminal and civil restitution during the year.
