PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined a bipartisan coalition of 34 state attorneys general urging Congress to maintain new federal hemp restrictions aimed at protecting consumers and preventing youth access to intoxicating hemp products.
In a letter to Congress, the coalition praised lawmakers for closing a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed unregulated intoxicating hemp-derived products to enter markets across the country.
Jackley said preserving the new rules is important to prevent increased access to intoxicating hemp products by young people and to ensure a safe, regulated hemp marketplace.
The attorneys general said maintaining the updated federal definition of hemp will better protect consumers and reflect Congress’ original intent when regulating hemp products.
