STURGIS, S.D. — One motorcyclist was killed and seven others were injured in a series of crashes reported Saturday, Aug. 8, during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred around 4:41 p.m. on U.S. Highway 85 near mile marker 35. Authorities said a 72-year-old man riding a 2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide braked for a motorcycle turning ahead of him, lost control of his bike and was thrown from the motorcycle. He later died from his injuries.
The Highway Patrol also investigated seven injury crashes involving motorcycles across the Black Hills area.
Among the incidents, riders lost control while navigating curves, collided with other vehicles, and one crash was attributed to a failed rear tire. A separate crash on U.S. Highway 16A involved three motorcyclists in a rear-end collision.
A 67-year-old rider suffered serious injuries after losing control on North Rochford Road and was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital. Authorities said he was not wearing a helmet.
Another motorcyclist was injured on U.S. Highway 14A when a westbound vehicle crossed the centerline. Additional injury crashes were reported on U.S. Highway 14A, S.D. Highway 44, U.S. Highway 16, and near Interstate 90 Exit 59. The crashes remain under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
