STURGIS, S.D. — A pickup truck was struck by an R.C.P. & E. train Saturday evening after the driver attempted to cross railroad tracks at Dixon Drive in Sturgis.
According to Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater, the driver failed to yield to the approaching train. The train struck the rear portion of the pickup, causing damage to the vehicle.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
The incident brought rail traffic and vehicle traffic to a standstill for several hours as the train blocked both the Dixon Drive crossing and Junction Avenue near the Ford dealership.
As a result, rally traffic traveling down Vanocker Canyon was detoured onto Pineview Drive while crews worked to clear the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
