SPEARFISH, S.D. — Fire crews from multiple agencies quickly responded to a wildfire that broke out Sunday afternoon between Spearfish and St. Onge, stopping the fire’s forward progress before it could spread further.
The False Bottom Creek Fire was reported about a mile west of Highway 34 near 196th Street at approximately 3:42 p.m. Sunday. The blaze burned an estimated 100 acres of grassland and timber.
According to South Dakota Wildland Fire, interagency resources were actively engaged on the fire Sunday evening, and crews had successfully halted its forward movement while suppression efforts continued.
Thunderstorms producing lightning moved through the area around the time the fire was reported. However, officials had not yet determined the cause of the wildfire.
