STURGIS, S.D. – South Dakota Highway Patrol officers reported 114 DUI arrests and three fatal crashes during this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally enforcement period, according to statistics compiled from Aug. 8 through Aug. 16.
The latest rally report shows law enforcement made 221 misdemeanor drug arrests and 108 felony drug arrests across the Sturgis and Rapid City districts. Troopers also issued 1,709 citations and 4,572 warnings during the reporting period.
Officials reported 31 non-injury crashes, 39 injury crashes and three fatal crashes resulting in three deaths. Those totals are lower than the same period last year, when four fatal crashes and four fatalities were recorded.
In a notable injury crash Saturday morning, a 69-year-old man riding a Harley-Davidson trike on Interstate 90 lost control in rainy conditions and struck a cable guardrail. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol noted that all crash information remains preliminary as investigations continue.
