RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City officials will break ground Aug. 24 on a new fire station, police substation and city park near the intersection of Homestead and Neel streets, bringing expanded public safety services and recreational amenities to the city’s rapidly growing east corridor.
The ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and will include Mayor Jason Salamun, Police Chief Don Hedrick, Fire Chief Jason Culberson and Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Biegler.
The joint public safety facility, known as Station 9, is expected to improve fire, ambulance and police response times in an area experiencing significant residential growth. Officials said co-locating fire and police services will strengthen collaboration while providing resources closer to residents.
The project also includes a new city park featuring green space, walking paths and recreational areas designed to connect nearby neighborhoods. Construction is expected to begin this month and be completed by December 2027.
