RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota High School Activities Association says Rapid City Central High School is handling an on-field altercation internally that occurred during an Aug. 14 soccer match against Brookings.
Video of the game shows a Rapid City Central player pushing a Brookings player to the ground before kicking and punching the athlete. The incident caused a 10-minute delay and resulted in the player’s ejection. Brookings went on to win the match 2-0.
SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos said the association has been in contact with both schools and that Rapid City Central is conducting its own investigation and disciplinary process. Under SDHSAA rules, an ejected player must miss the next contest, and reports are required from game officials and the athlete’s school.
A statement released by the Rapid City School District emphasized the importance of respect, sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior on and off the field and stated that appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with school policies.
Swartos said schools typically handle additional disciplinary action beyond standard SDHSAA penalties, noting that student privacy rules may limit what information is released publicly about the outcome.
