PRAIRIE CITY, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms brought large hail and damaging winds to parts of western South Dakota Sunday, with the heaviest impacts reported in Perkins, Harding and Custer counties.
In Perkins County, wind-driven hail as large as ping-pong balls was reported near Prairie City. Northwest of Prairie City, strong winds broke tree branches up to six inches in diameter and reportedly pushed a round hay bale several hundred feet.
In Harding County, southwest of Reva, hail measuring 1.75 inches in diameter was reported.
Storms also produced large hail in the southern Black Hills area. Hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter was reported east of Fairburn and near Pactola Reservoir. Smaller hail, around one inch in diameter, was reported in Hermosa and Johnson Siding.
No injuries or major damage have been reported, but the storms served as a reminder of the severe weather potential across western South Dakota.
