RAPID CITY, S.D. – Pennington County officials are reminding short-term rental operators to obtain the required county license before enforcement begins later this year.
The rule applies to vacation rentals and other properties rented for short stays through online platforms. The county’s Planning and Zoning Department says it will begin notifying property owners who appear to be operating without a license.
Owners who receive a notice will have until December 3rd, 2026, to bring their properties into compliance. After that deadline, unlicensed operators could face fines of $200 per day until they obtain the required permit.
The deadline follows a six-month compliance period approved by the Pennington County Board of Commissioners that began on June 3rd.
County officials say the three-year license costs $150. To identify potentially unlicensed rentals, the county uses data from Deckard Technologies, which analyzes publicly available vacation rental listings and booking information.
Officials are encouraging rental owners to contact the Planning and Zoning Department and complete the licensing process before enforcement and fines take effect in December.
