RAPID CITY, S.D. – Leaders from South Dakota’s two busiest airports are asking the state for additional financial support as major expansion projects move forward in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.
Rapid City Regional Airport Executive Director Patrick Dame told the South Dakota Aeronautics Commission that record passenger growth is creating congestion at gates, security checkpoints, and parking areas. The airport is currently undertaking projects worth nearly $192 million, including a five-gate terminal expansion and upgrades to TSA and baggage screening facilities.
In Sioux Falls, Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier said continued passenger growth has strained existing facilities, with gate areas handling far more travelers than originally intended. The airport is pursuing a $135 million expansion that includes terminal, runway, and taxiway improvements.
Both airports have already secured millions in federal funding and are set to receive $15 million in low-interest state loans. However, officials say inflation and rising construction costs have created additional funding needs.
The airport directors are asking the Aeronautics Commission to form a subcommittee to review the projects and explore options for additional state assistance to help complete the expansions.
