RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City leaders officially broke ground Monday on a new $9.1 million public safety complex on the city’s growing east side.
The project, known as Station 9, will be located near Homestead and Neel Streets and will house both a fire station and police substation under one roof, marking the first time the two departments have shared the same facility in Rapid City history.
City officials say the co-located facility will help address high call volumes in the area, improve emergency response times, and strengthen coordination between police and fire personnel. Police Chief Don Hedrick says the shared space is a more efficient and cost-effective use of taxpayer dollars than constructing separate buildings.
The fire station will operate around the clock and serve as the department’s new hazardous materials response hub, with specialized bays for hazmat trailers and equipment. To staff the station, the fire department is seeking funding for 21 additional firefighters in the 2027 budget.
The development will also include a new city park featuring green space, walking paths, and recreational amenities connected to nearby neighborhoods.
Mayor Jason Salamun says the project reflects the city’s commitment to public safety and quality of life without raising taxes.
Construction is expected to begin this month, with the facility and park slated to open by December 2027.
