GILLETTE, WYO. – The family of a man who died in the Campbell County Jail in 2022 has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Campbell County and members of the Sheriff’s Office.
The lawsuit stems from the death of Kenneth Durrah in December 2022. According to the complaint, Durrah was experiencing a medical crisis related to apparent drug use when officers allegedly restrained him rather than providing medical treatment.
Attorneys for the family claim officers held Durrah under their body weight for several minutes while he repeatedly said he could not breathe. The lawsuit also alleges officers removed his clothing, placed him in a restraint chair, and left him unattended. Durrah reportedly died about 25 minutes later.
The lawsuit accuses the county and involved officers of violating Durrah’s constitutional rights and seeks to hold them accountable for his death.
Durrah’s family says the legal action is aimed at seeking justice, while their attorney alleges jail staff failed to provide necessary medical care and that no disciplinary action was taken following the incident.
The allegations have been made in the lawsuit and have not been proven in court.
