RAPID CITY, S.D. – A man charged in connection with a 2022 homicide at a Rapid City bar has been sentenced to five years in prison after entering an Alford plea to accessory to murder.
Timothy Huante entered the plea Monday in the death of Dallas Quick Bear, who died after an incident at Teddy’s Bar on February 20, 2022. The five-year sentence is the maximum penalty allowed under South Dakota law for the charge.
An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain his innocence while acknowledging prosecutors have enough evidence that could result in a conviction at trial.
Huante was originally charged with first-degree murder, and the case spent more than four years moving through the court system, including reviews by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
The Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office says changes in the expected evidence and court rulings influenced how the case was ultimately resolved.
Huante has remained in the Pennington County Jail since his arrest in 2022 and has now been transferred to state custody to serve his sentence. He also faces a separate federal firearms charge.
