RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Pennington County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to shooting at a passing dump truck on Radar Hill Road.
Sixty-year-old Delray Ryckman pleaded guilty in June to discharge of a firearm at an occupied motor vehicle, a Class 3 felony under South Dakota law.
During sentencing, prosecutors argued for the maximum 15-year prison term, saying Ryckman’s actions were part of a pattern of repeatedly firing at moving vehicles over several years and posed a serious danger to the public.
Assistant Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Olivia Siglin told the court it was fortunate no one was injured or killed and said a lengthy prison sentence was necessary to protect the community.
Before imposing the 10-year sentence, Seventh Circuit Judge Joshua Hendrickson described Ryckman’s conduct as disturbing, reckless, and potentially deadly.
The conviction carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. No injuries were reported in the Radar Hill Road incident.
