Bear Sighting Reported Near Sturgis as Black Bear Activity Continues in Northern Hills

STURGIS, S.D. – A bear sighting near Sturgis is drawing attention after video of the animal began circulating on social media this week.

Resident Isaiah Cole captured footage of what appears to be a black bear near the mouth of Boulder Canyon along U.S. Highway 14A. The image was later shared by Meade County Town Hall on Facebook.

The sighting follows several recent reports of black bear activity in the Northern Black Hills. Earlier this summer, a young male black bear was spotted near Spearfish Canyon Lodge after getting into unsecured garbage, prompting temporary trail closures while Game, Fish and Parks officers responded.

Black bears have also been seen on home security cameras in Spearfish neighborhoods and on the outskirts of Lead.

Wildlife officials remind residents to secure garbage, pet food and other attractants, as black bears continue to move through the area in search of food.
