SOUTH DAKOTA – More than 130,000 South Dakotans are experiencing food insecurity, according to Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap report.
As part of Hunger Action Month in September, Feeding South Dakota is raising awareness of the issue and encouraging residents to get involved. The report estimates 130,340 South Dakotans lack consistent access to enough food, including one in five children across the state.
Organization leaders say increasing costs for groceries, utilities and other household expenses are putting additional pressure on families.
Throughout September, donations to Feeding South Dakota will be matched through a partnership with First Interstate Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.
The nonprofit is also hosting a statewide volunteer-a-thon called “Delivering Through the Decades” at its distribution centers in Rapid City, Pierre and Sioux Falls, where volunteers will help sort and pack food for distribution.
Feeding South Dakota serves all 66 counties through a network of programs and community partners supporting families, children and seniors across the state.
