RAPID CITY, S.D. – Drivers heading out for Labor Day weekend may be paying the highest holiday gas prices on record.
GasBuddy projects the national average price for gasoline will reach $4.03 per gallon over the holiday weekend. That’s 87 cents higher than last year and above the previous Labor Day record of $3.83 per gallon, set in 2012.
Analysts say higher prices have been driven by international conflicts and fuel supply disruptions, including tensions in the Middle East and attacks on Russian refinery infrastructure.
Labor Day gas prices have climbed sharply from $3.16 per gallon in 2025 to a projected $4.03 this year.
There may be some relief after the holiday, as fuel demand typically declines after summer travel season and many regions transition to less expensive winter fuel blends later this month.
