RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota is introducing a new driver’s license and identification card design featuring updated security technology and a refreshed appearance.
State officials say the redesigned cards are intended to provide stronger protection against fraud and identity theft while making information easier for both cardholders and law enforcement to read.
The new credentials include advanced printing techniques and embedded security features designed to make the cards more difficult to counterfeit.
Driver License Exam Stations across South Dakota will begin issuing the updated licenses and ID cards throughout September as they transition to the new system. The exact rollout date will vary by location.
Officials stress that residents do not need to take any immediate action. Current licenses and identification cards will remain valid until their expiration dates. The new design will be issued during renewals or when applying for a new credential.
