SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fire crews continue working to contain the Lookout Fire northwest of Spearfish after the wildfire grew to an estimated 445 acres overnight.
The fire was first reported Monday afternoon south of Cactus Place near Interstate 90 and quickly spread through the Lookout Mountain area. Officials say forward progress has been stopped on the north side of the fire, while crews continue constructing containment lines and working along the southern flank.
A Type Three Incident Management Team is overseeing firefighting operations, with aircraft assisting ground crews by dropping water and fire retardant.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for residents near Lookout Mountain, Kerwin Lane, Lookout Vista Road and surrounding areas. Residents spent Monday helping move livestock to safety and preparing homes as the fire advanced.
Authorities are also reminding drivers not to stop along Interstate 90 to view the fire, saying it creates dangerous conditions for both motorists and emergency responders.

SPEARFISH, S.D. (Sept. 7, 2026) — Firefighters from multiple agencies are battling the rapidly spreading Lookout Fire burning in the Lookout Mountain area north of Spearfish, prompting evacuation orders for nearby residents as crews work to protect homes and contain the blaze.
The wildfire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Monday in the area of the 3500 block of Cactus Place, near Kerwin Road and east of U.S. Highway 85. Initial reports from fire-monitoring services estimated the fire at approximately 40 acres, with witnesses describing the fire as moving quickly toward the south and southeast through timber and grass fuels.
As fire activity intensified, Lawrence County Emergency Management issued an emergency evacuation order for residents in the immediate area of Lookout Mountain, Kerwin Road, Lookout Vista Road, and surrounding neighborhoods.
