RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s construction boom continues at a record pace.
According to the City’s Building Services Division, more than $55.8 million in building permits were issued in August, making it the highest August valuation total ever recorded in Rapid City.
Through the first eight months of 2026, the city has issued nearly 1,800 permits with a combined valuation of more than $360 million. That’s more than $100 million ahead of the pace set during the same period last year.
With four months still remaining in the year, Rapid City has already recorded the sixth-highest annual building valuation total in city history and is approaching the full-year totals seen in both 2024 and 2025.
Among the largest projects approved in August was a $34 million permit for Monument Health’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit project. Other major permits included work at the Ford dealership, renovations at The Elements building downtown, a new retail development, a luxury home project and equipment upgrades at Black Hills Surgery Center.
City officials say the numbers reflect continued strong growth and investment across Rapid City.
