PINE RIDGE, S.D. – Fire crews continue making progress on the Needles-Event Fire on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, but the wildfire has now burned more than 6,000 acres.
The fire is located a few miles east of Evergreen and was reported at 60 percent containment as of the latest update.
Over the holiday weekend, Alpha One Fire and Rescue said the fire was not threatening any homes, despite concerns from residents in the area. Officials say people can expect to see smoke and occasional flare-ups as trees and other heavy fuels continue to burn within the fire perimeter.
Fire officials are also urging residents across the reservation to remain alert for new smoke columns. Recent thunderstorms brought lightning to the area, and lightning-struck trees can smolder for hours or even days before developing into active wildfires.
Crews continue monitoring the fire and working to increase containment.
