RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Common Council has approved the first reading of the city’s proposed 2027 budget.
Council members voted 7-2 Tuesday night to advance the budget and also approved an 8-1 vote to restore $100,000 to the mayor’s budget.
The spending plan includes several adjustments adopted during a special budget session in August. Those changes include funding for an additional planner and code enforcement officer, increased support for the Canyon Lake Activity Center and Minneluzahan Senior Center, higher wages for Rapid Transit System drivers, and additional staffing and professional services funding for the parks department.
The budget also reduces the City Council contingency fund by $700,000 and cuts funding for the city’s 2027 Independence Day celebration from $500,000 to $100,000.
A second and final reading of the budget is scheduled for Sept. 21. State law requires cities to approve their budgets by Sept. 30.
