RAPID CITY, S.D. – Volunteers of America Northern Rockies is launching its annual diaper drive to collect 20,000 diapers, 10,000 diaper wipes and $3,000 in donations to help local families in need.
Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun is proclaiming September 14th through the 20th as Diaper Need Awareness Week, and several city facilities will serve as collection sites, including City Hall, the Public Library, Fire Station One, and the Public Safety Building.
Donations will support Mommy’s Closet, one of only two diaper banks in South Dakota. Last year’s drive collected more than 10,000 diapers and over 7,000 wipes, and organizers are hoping to nearly double those totals this year.
Officials say diaper need remains a significant challenge for many families, with diapers costing up to $100 per month per child and not covered by programs such as SNAP or WIC.
Residents can donate diapers, wipes or monetary contributions throughout Awareness Week to help support local families and young children.
