PIERRE, S.D. – Fire officials say two large wildfires burning west of Pierre are now fully contained.
According to the National Interagency Fire Center, both the Van Metre Fire in Jones County and the Four Corners Fire in Stanley County are now 100 percent contained.
The Van Metre Fire burned more than 1,090 acres after it was reported Tuesday afternoon. The nearby Four Corners Fire burned approximately 665 acres after igniting around the same time.
Earlier reports indicated neither fire was contained as crews worked to establish control lines and stop the spread.
No additional information on damage or the cause of the fires has been released. Officials will continue monitoring both fire areas to ensure there are no flare-ups.
