RAPID CITY, S.D. – Former South Dakota lawmaker, rancher, and agricultural leader Lars Herseth has died at the age of 80.
Herseth passed away Sept. 12 at his home near Houghton following a battle with cancer, according to his obituary.
A longtime Democratic leader, Herseth served 20 years in the South Dakota Legislature, including service in both the House and Senate. During his political career, he held leadership roles as House minority leader, Senate president pro tempore, and Senate minority leader. He was also the Democratic nominee for governor in 1986.
Herseth was known for his work on agriculture, transportation, economic development, and health care issues. He also played a key role in efforts to preserve rail service in South Dakota during the railroad challenges of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
After leaving public office, Herseth remained active in agriculture and renewable fuels, serving as president of the American Coalition for Ethanol and working with the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council.
A memorial service is scheduled for October 4 at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Herseth is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family.
