RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Fire Department is reminding motorists to stay clear of active emergency scenes after several drivers entered a fire response area Monday, including one vehicle that drove over a fire hose.
Firefighters were called just before noon to a vehicle fire near West Rapid Street and West Boulevard. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the engine compartment and quickly brought the fire under control.
During the response, firefighters reported multiple vehicles drove through the active scene, creating potential safety hazards.
The department says driving through emergency areas can damage firefighting equipment and endanger first responders, emergency personnel, and the public.
Officials are asking drivers to slow down when approaching emergency scenes, give crews plenty of space, and use alternate routes whenever possible.
Firefighters note that personnel, hoses, and other equipment are often positioned in or near roadways during emergency operations.
