RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City officials are urging residents to verify information about city programs and services after discovering inaccurate AI-generated search results online.
The city says one recent AI response incorrectly claimed Rapid City offers reimbursement for sidewalk and curb repairs. Officials say the information appears to have mixed Rapid City policies with programs offered in other states.
City leaders say this is not the first instance of AI-generated misinformation, noting similar confusion recently involving recycling pickup schedules. Residents are encouraged to rely on the City of Rapid City’s official website or contact city departments directly when seeking information.
Officials emphasize that Rapid City property owners must maintain and repair sidewalks adjacent to their property and clear snow and ice within 24 hours after a snow event. If safety hazards are not addressed, Code Enforcement can arrange for the work to be completed and bill the property owner for the cost.
The city says while AI tools can be helpful, residents should confirm important information through official sources before taking action.
