RAPID CITY, S.D. — Volunteers and community partners were recognized at the McGillycuddy House in Rapid City for their work preserving the historic home of Dr. Valentine McGillycuddy, an influential figure in Black Hills history.
A plaque was presented to honor the collaborative effort that has helped restore the home through volunteer labor, donor support, and extensive archival research. The project has included reconstructing portions of the house using vintage photographs to guide the restoration.
McGillycuddy played a significant role in the region’s development, serving as a frontier surgeon, mayor of Rapid City, and dean of the South Dakota School of Mines.
Organizers also highlighted assistance from the City of Deadwood and the many volunteers who have contributed to the ongoing preservation work. Supporters say the project demonstrates the importance of protecting historic landmarks and preserving the rich history of the Black Hills for future generations.
