RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City officials are reminding residents not to rely solely on artificial intelligence-generated search results when seeking information about city programs and services.
The warning follows a recent incident in which AI-generated information incorrectly stated that Rapid City reimburses property owners for sidewalk and curb repairs. City officials said the response combined accurate details about Rapid City with policies from other states, resulting in misleading information.
Rapid City clarified that it does not offer a sidewalk or curb repair reimbursement program. Residents are encouraged to verify information through the city’s official website or by contacting the appropriate city department directly.
Under city policy, property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks adjacent to their property and covering the cost of necessary repairs. Property owners are also required to promptly remove snow and ice from sidewalks. If issues are not addressed, the city may take corrective action and bill the property owner for the costs.
Officials say checking official city sources remains the best way to ensure information is accurate and up to date.
