SPEARFISH, S.D. – The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and Division of Criminal Investigation are mourning the loss of Special Agent Quincy Kjerstad, who died September 14 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty three days earlier.
Kjerstad joined the Attorney General’s Office in 2017 as an Assistant Attorney General, serving in both appellate and civil litigation roles. In 2023, he became a special agent with the DCI, where he investigated major felony cases across 13 counties as part of the West River Major Crimes Unit.
Attorney General Marty Jackley and DCI Director Chad Mosteller praised Kjerstad’s dedication to public service, describing him as a respected colleague, mentor, and investigator who left a lasting impact on those he worked with.
Kjerstad is survived by his wife and three young children.
Visitation will be held Friday evening at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Rapid City, with a Burial Mass scheduled for Saturday morning. Full law enforcement honors will follow the service.
