RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City officials are reminding residents to verify information before trusting AI-generated search results online.
The warning comes after an AI search result incorrectly claimed the city offers a program that reimburses property owners for sidewalk and curb repairs. City officials say no such program exists.
According to the city, the false information appears to have combined Rapid City regulations with reimbursement programs from other states.
Officials say they’ve seen similar problems before, including incorrect AI-generated information about local recycling pickup schedules.
Under Rapid City city code, property owners are responsible for maintaining and repairing sidewalks adjacent to their property.
City leaders say residents should contact city offices directly when seeking information about programs, services, or regulations to ensure they receive accurate and up-to-date answers.
Officials also note that AI-generated search tools can make mistakes and should not be considered a substitute for official sources.
