RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Lookout Fire near Spearfish is now fully contained, but fire officials say the conditions that fueled the blaze remain a concern across western South Dakota.
The fire burned 444 acres and was sparked by burning hay bales. Officials say strong winds, dry conditions, and terrain allowed the fire to spread quickly before crews from multiple agencies brought it under control.
Rapid City Fire Department officials note that the Black Hills region remains at high risk for wildfires, especially as South Dakota continues to experience drought conditions.
Firefighters are encouraging residents to create defensible space around homes by clearing dry vegetation, pine needles, firewood, and other flammable materials from around structures.
Officials also remind residents to use caution with activities that can create sparks, properly dispose of wood stove ashes, and stay alert during warm, windy fall days.
Emergency managers say preparation before a wildfire starts remains one of the most effective ways to protect homes and property.
