RAPID CITY, S.D. – Thousands of hikers from across the United States and around the world gathered in the Black Hills this weekend for the 40th Annual Crazy Horse Memorial Volksmarch.
Participants completed either a 5K or 10K hike, traveling dirt trails and gravel roads to the arm of the Crazy Horse Mountain Carving for a close-up view of the iconic monument.
Crazy Horse Memorial officials say the event has become a tradition for many families and visitors, while others travel to the Black Hills to check the experience off their bucket list.
The Volksmarch also served as a major food drive. Hikers received free admission to the memorial by donating three canned food items, with donations benefiting Church Response and families across local communities and tribal reservations.
Organizers say the annual event remains the largest organized hike in the country and continues to draw thousands of visitors while celebrating four decades of hiking history at Crazy Horse Memorial.
