WASHINGTON, D.C. – South Dakota Senator John Thune is praising the Senate’s passage of the Protect College Sports Act, legislation designed to create nationwide rules for student-athlete compensation through name, image, and likeness, or NIL, agreements.
The bill passed the U.S. Senate by a vote of 77 to 22 and represents Congress’ most significant effort so far to establish national standards for college athletics compensation.
Following the vote, Thune said the legislation would help restore stability in college sports and ensure colleges and universities, including those in South Dakota, can continue providing valuable opportunities for student-athletes.
The measure now moves to the U.S. House of Representatives for consideration. If approved by the House, it would then head to President Donald Trump for his signature.
