RAPID CITY, S.D. – Miniature engines and precision craftsmanship were on display at the Central States Fairgrounds as hobbyists from across North America gathered for the annual Black Hills Model Engine Expo.
The event, which has been bringing builders together for nearly 30 years, featured working scale-model engines, tractors, gear systems, and other mechanical creations built from raw metal over months and sometimes years of work.
Organizer Mike Stutz says the expo is unique because it is the only dedicated model engine show west of the Mississippi, drawing exhibitors from across the United States and beyond. He says the event allows builders to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and showcase their craftsmanship to the public.
Families and mechanical enthusiasts spent the weekend watching miniature gas and steam engines in action. Organizers say donations collected during the expo will help secure the venue and bring exhibitors back to the Black Hills for next year’s event.
