PINE RIDGE, S.D. – A Pine Ridge man with a prior felony conviction has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison following his conviction on multiple domestic violence charges.
Forty-nine-year-old Jimmy Pilcher was sentenced Monday in federal court in Rapid City to 11 years and three months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. A federal jury found Pilcher guilty earlier this year on charges including assault by strangulation, assault resulting in substantial bodily injury, and assault with a dangerous weapon. Prosecutors later dismissed a witness-tampering charge.
During sentencing, prosecutors detailed multiple incidents of violence against the victim in 2025 and argued Pilcher had a history of abusive behavior. Testimony also alleged Pilcher repeatedly attempted to contact the victim from jail and pressured her not to participate in court proceedings.
Defense attorneys argued Pilcher has struggled with addiction for years and asked the court to focus on rehabilitation. U.S. District Judge Camela Theeler acknowledged those concerns but said she could not overlook what she described as a pattern of repeated violence against domestic partners.
Pilcher was previously convicted in a 2013 vehicular homicide case and was released on parole in 2023. He was arrested in the current case in January of this year.
