RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Children’s Home Society of South Dakota is preparing to open its new Rapid City campus later this month, marking a major milestone in a multi-year expansion project.
The organization announced it remains on track for a grand opening on October 20 at its new campus on Mount Rushmore Road, nearly three years after purchasing the former National American University property. This week, officials celebrated the completion of new life-skills and family engagement rooms funded through a humanitarian grant from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Children’s Home Society leaders say the spaces will help children learn everyday skills such as cooking, laundry, and household management while also providing areas for families to strengthen relationships during treatment and recovery.
The new campus will consolidate several West River services into one location, including mental health services, foster care and adoption programs, child advocacy services, and educational programs. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to serve 96 day-school students, 36 residential treatment clients, and thousands of families through therapy and support services.
Children’s Home Society officials say the project addresses a growing need for mental health and family services in western South Dakota and will allow the organization to expand its impact across the Black Hills region.
