LEAD, S.D. – The Sanford Underground Research Facility is now accepting applications for its 2027 Artist-in-Residence program, which brings artists and scientists together through a unique creative partnership.
The program, offered in collaboration with Black Hills State University, gives artists the opportunity to create works inspired by SURF, the nation’s deepest underground laboratory. Located nearly a mile underground in the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, the facility hosts cutting-edge research in physics, biology, geology, and engineering.
Selected artists will participate in a four-week summer residency, receive a five-thousand-dollar stipend, and may qualify for up to five-thousand dollars in additional project funding. The program also includes travel, housing, a public exhibition, and a lecture opportunity.
The Artist-in-Residence program was launched in 2019 and is designed to encourage collaboration between the arts and sciences while increasing public awareness of the groundbreaking research taking place at SURF.
Applications are due November 1. More information is available through the Sanford Underground Research Facility website.
