SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The candidates for South Dakota’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives debated Thursday night in Sioux Falls, highlighting differences on trade, health care, and tribal policy ahead of the November election.
Republican Attorney General Marty Jackley and Democratic candidate Nikki Gronli sparred over tariffs, with both addressing the impact of trade policies on South Dakota agriculture. Jackley said he supports targeted tariffs but criticized efforts to increase imports of foreign beef, arguing it could hurt American cattle producers. Gronli countered that tariffs have increased costs for farmers and consumers and created uncertainty for businesses.
The candidates also disagreed on health care policy. Jackley defended recent federal legislation that directs funding to states for rural health improvements, while Gronli argued that changes to programs like Medicaid could make health care less accessible for many South Dakotans.
On tribal issues, both candidates agreed that Native American communities need better support from the federal government, particularly in public safety and essential services. However, they differed on how federal resources should be prioritized to address long-standing challenges on reservations.
South Dakota voters will decide the race on November 3.
