BLACK HILLS, S.D. – Drivers across western South Dakota should prepare for several road construction projects that will bring closures, lane restrictions, and delays throughout the coming weeks.
One of the biggest impacts begins Monday in Keystone, where Highway 16A will close for a bridge replacement project expected to continue through April of 2027. Detours and size restrictions will be in place during the work.
Motorists in the Black Hills should also be aware of tunnel inspections scheduled next week along Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, and in Keystone. Some routes will experience temporary closures or traffic delays as crews complete routine inspections.
In Rapid City, a lane closure on Canyon Lake Drive is scheduled to begin October 6 for fiber optic installation work and will continue through the end of November. Downtown drivers can also expect delays October 10 and 11 as railroad crews upgrade signals and improve the Fifth Street crossing.
Meanwhile, Highway 14A between Deadwood and Lead will close beginning Friday night, October 9, for pipe installation work near the Broken Boot Gold Mine. The highway is expected to reopen early Monday morning, with additional lane restrictions continuing through mid-October.
Transportation officials are encouraging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and check current road conditions before heading out.
