MISSION, S.D. – A Mission man has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison after pleading guilty to two separate assaults involving dangerous weapons on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.
Twenty-year-old Daniel Hart was sentenced September 28th to six years and seven months in federal prison. The sentence covers two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and will be followed by three years of supervised release.
Federal prosecutors say the first incident occurred in May of 2025 outside a gas station in Mission. Hart and others assaulted a man with a machete and by kicking him, leaving the victim with multiple injuries, including cuts to his arm and scalp.
In a second incident in December of 2025, prosecutors say Hart approached a vehicle after it was blocked by another car, pointed a firearm at the driver, and fired a shot that struck the victim in the leg.
Hart was indicted in January of this year and pleaded guilty in June. The cases were prosecuted under the federal Major Crimes Act, which gives federal authorities jurisdiction over certain violent crimes committed in Indian Country.
The incidents were investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Hart was taken into U.S. Marshals custody following sentencing.
