RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City residents turned to local swimming pools in record numbers this summer as persistent hot weather drove people to seek relief from the heat.
According to data released by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, more than 96,200 admissions were recorded at the Sioux Park, Horace Mann, Parkview, and Roosevelt Swim Center pools during the 2026 summer season. The total marks a significant increase from the 88,270 admissions recorded in 2025 and continues a steady upward trend in pool attendance.
The Roosevelt Swim Center led all facilities with more than 46,000 admissions, while Sioux Park welcomed more than 23,500 visitors during the season.
City Recreation Director Matt Brandhagen said record-breaking temperatures throughout the summer contributed to the increased attendance, along with several special events that attracted large crowds. He noted that the pools were especially busy on many of the hottest days.
To accommodate demand, two outdoor facilities remained open beyond their normal schedules. The Sioux Park pool stayed open through Sept. 6, while the 50-meter pool at the Roosevelt Swim Center remained open until Sept. 26.
Parks and Recreation officials are encouraging residents to continue using the Roosevelt Swim Center throughout the fall and winter months. The department is also seeking lifeguards for the 2027 summer season. Interested applicants can contact the City’s Recreation Division for more information.
