SOUTH DAKOTA, – A nationwide debate over access to abortion medication is intensifying as anti-abortion groups push for more states to require in-person medical visits, ultrasounds, and waiting periods before patients can receive abortion pills.
The effort comes as federal officials continue reviewing regulations governing medication abortions. Current FDA guidelines allow abortion pills to be prescribed through telehealth without requiring an in-person visit, but anti-abortion advocates are seeking stricter requirements at both the state and federal levels.
Supporters of additional restrictions argue that ultrasounds and in-person examinations can help identify potential health concerns and ensure patient safety. Several states already require some combination of in-person consultations, waiting periods, or ultrasounds before medication abortions can take place.
Abortion rights advocates, meanwhile, argue that medication abortion has been shown to be safe and that additional requirements create barriers to care, particularly for women in rural areas who may need to travel long distances, take time off work, or arrange childcare.
The debate is expected to continue in state legislatures and federal courts as legal challenges move forward and the FDA completes its ongoing review of abortion pill regulations.
Medication abortions currently account for a majority of abortions performed in the United States, making any changes to access rules significant for both supporters and opponents of abortion rights.
