SOUTH DAKOTA, S.D. – South Dakota wildlife officials are forecasting another productive pheasant hunting season following one of the strongest harvest years in recent memory.
Hunters harvested more than 1.35 million pheasants during the 2025 season, marking the highest statewide total in recent years. Nearly 140,000 hunters participated in the season, averaging 9.7 birds per hunter. Officials say that was the highest harvest rate per hunter since 2011.
The strong numbers have wildlife managers optimistic heading into the 2026 season, with South Dakota continuing to be a premier destination for pheasant hunters from across the country.
The resident-only pheasant season begins Oct. 10 and runs through Oct. 12. The traditional statewide pheasant season opens Oct. 17 and continues through Jan. 31.
State officials are encouraging hunters to review regulations, secure the necessary licenses, and practice safe hunting habits as another busy season gets underway across South Dakota.
