STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council approved an agreement with the South Dakota Department of Transportation that allows access to city property to haul materials needed for upcoming Interstate 90 improvements.
The agreement is tied to a 2025 land sale in which the City of Sturgis sold approximately 48 acres in the Southside Addition to the state. The property is expected to provide fill material for a major Interstate 90 construction project between Exits 32 and 37, with work scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue through 2027.
Public Works Director Rick Bush said state trucks will primarily use a haul route along Junction Avenue between the property access point and the eastbound I-90 ramps. The agreement also allows access across approximately 17 acres of adjacent land that the city retained as part of the original transaction.
Bush emphasized that the haul route will not include a recently paved city road that provides access to a municipal well.
Under the agreement, city and state officials will conduct a joint inspection of the haul route before construction begins to document existing road and property conditions. That assessment will help distinguish pre-existing damage from any impacts caused by construction traffic and ensure affected areas can be restored once the project is complete.
The city will remain responsible for routine maintenance along the haul route, and officials say no additional expenses are expected as a result of the agreement.
