RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City has been awarded a $7.125 million federal transportation grant to fund major improvements along Skyline Drive, one of the city’s most recognizable scenic routes.
City officials say Rapid City is one of only 11 communities nationwide selected to receive a National Scenic Byways Grant. The award represents about 75 percent of the total funding available in the program’s latest grant cycle and will help finance a series of safety and accessibility upgrades along the roadway.
Planned improvements include enhanced safety features for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians, improved access to trailheads and scenic overlooks, upgraded parking areas, and new visitor amenities. The project will also focus on preserving historic features such as Skyline Drive’s stone walls and iconic gateway entrance.
Rapid City Grants Division Manager Jaimie Toennies said the project is designed to improve the visitor experience while protecting the scenic, historic, and cultural character that makes Skyline Drive a unique destination in the Black Hills.
Mayor Jason Salamun called the award a significant investment in one of Rapid City’s most popular attractions, saying the improvements will help ensure the roadway can be enjoyed safely for generations to come.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation assisted with the application process and will help administer the grant. City officials expect the Skyline Drive improvement project to go out for bid in late 2027.
